
Documents required to register a marriage in Türkiye
A marriage contract in Türkiye is a civil contract drawn up by the marriage registry offices at the municipality, which is the authority empowered to handle marriage procedures in Türkiye.
The Turkish government does not recognise a contract concluded in religious form only “a marriage before a sheikh”.
For a marriage to be registered legally in Türkiye, Turkish law sets out several conditions that applicants must meet, namely:
1- Capacity to marry
Capacity to marry in Türkiye is measured by two main factors: mental capacity and age
2- Freedom from certain illnesses
Some illnesses can stand in the way of registering a marriage in Türkiye.
3- No marriage already in place
Turkish law does not allow a second marriage contract to be drawn up unless the first contract between the spouses has been brought to an end.
Documents required to register a marriage in Türkiye
1- A copy of the passport, translated and certified before the Noter in Türkiye “the notary public” For Syrians in Türkiye, the temporary residence card may stand in for the passport.
2- A tenancy contract, a population registration record or any document proving residence in Türkiye
3- A certificate of single status or a civil status record certified by the embassy or consulate of the foreign national's country
4- A family registration extract issued by the embassy or consulate of the foreign national's country, translated and certified before the Noter in Türkiye
5- A divorce certificate or a death certificate for the previous spouse, where this is a second marriage
